With a little over a month left for Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) to kick start, DUBAI is gearing up to bring out yet another edition of wholesome entertainment for the entire family.
Massive preparations are already underway for the much-awaited summer event that has brought about a turnaround in the way summer is perceived in Dubai, set to begin on June 21st. With 10 weekly themed surprises, a specially designed Modhesh Fun City, events and activities to creatively engage people of different ages, an array of attractive offers and promotions, DSS comes with a refreshing new edition each year. It has come a long way from being just a children-oriented event and has evolved into an event with mass appeal that offers endless fun with loads of entertainment and learning opportunities to boot.
The major attraction of DSS is the Modhesh Fun City, which is built up at the Dubai International Airport Expo each year. Modhesh is the fun-loving and lovable mascot of DSS, readily identified by his presence all over the city and his infectious smile. The Modhesh Fun City is built as a place dedicated to all things fun and a place to celebrate the cheer and exuberance of childhood. This Fun City remains open throughout the duration of DSS, and attracts a large number of visitors who appreciate the quality of activities on offer there.
During this much-awaited festival, Dubai's various malls get together to offer major reductions and discounts. The charm is irresistible; over seven million shoppers flex their credit cards at this event. Live shows, activities and competitions keep the whole family happy while the shopaholics shop.
The 2006 event divides up the ten weeks into separate themes - including Food Surprises, Ice Surprises, Arts Surprises, Nature Surprises and Adventure Surprises. Hotels and hotel apartments offer a variety of discounted packages for those who want to make a holiday out of it. Ice Surprises from June 21st - 28th
This event, organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Department (DEWA) showcases a series of exciting sporting events, an ice show and present a whole new world of ice to experience in a desert country. It will include a theatrical performance on ice 'Sindbad's Adventure in Gulf countries', Journey to the Eskimo Land - a fascinating journey into the Ice World and several interactive events which will be taking place at various locations in Dubai. Ice Cream eating contests, ice cream decorations contests, Ice Characters Meeting and Greeting will be some of the highlights of this week
Arts Surprises from June 29th - July 5th
Arts Surprises week, held under the guidance of the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD), will revolve around different areas of art such as music, theatre, cinema, painting, and much more. Besides several art oriented activities in different malls, there will be specific events like the Magic Forest that will take place at the Modhesh Fun City
Food Surprises from July 6th - 12th
The Arts Surprises will be followed by Food Surprises organised by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). With tasty treats galore, the Food Surprises will bring many an international cuisine from around the world. DTCM will bring various Dubai hotels to participate and the best chefs will showcase their culinary prowess at various events held during this week. Ice, fruit, vegetable and chocolate carvings will be also on display. The participating hotels will be presenting cuisines from all over the world for sampling at the Emirates Boulevard.
Adventure Surprises from July 13th - 19th
The Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS) will be organising the Adventure Surprises week from July 13 to July 19 and will bring adventurous treasure hunts and competitions. The department adds an adventurous dimension to its multi-faceted portfolio during the DSS. They have lined up some innovative activities to thrill and surprise not only the little ones but also grown-ups this summer. Beach Volleyball, Telematches, Marathons, Waiters Races, Mothers Races, Skating Competitions, Treasure Hunts and beach games will bond the elements of fun and fitness in a delightful manner during this week.
Cartoon Surprises from July 20th - 26th
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) are organising the Cartoon Surprises and will bring some popular international cartoon characters to entertain the little ones. Children will be able to have more fun with three sorts of entertaining activities, which include performances by 'The Giant Brothers', artists from one of the biggest puppet theatres in the world and a carnival. Children will be also surprised with brain-storming contests which would create a sort of positive competition with the presence of different cartoon characters. Contests involving cartoon characters will also be conducted during the whole days of the week targeting children of different categories of age. Children will also keep themselves busy and enjoying with three different workshops that the team of the cartoon surprises has prepared for them. The fourth main category of the cartoon surprises activities involve plays such as the 'Giants Kingdom', and other educational and entertaining plays to be conducted with an attractive decoration and different comic and dramatic shows that ensure more interaction with the attending children audience.
Nature Surprises from July 27th - August 2nd
The Dubai Police G.H.Q. will present the Nature Surprises. Nature Surprises will make their debut this year and focus on environment protection and the bounties of nature. Their creative faculties will get yet another outlet by organising interesting activities during the Nature Surprises week. The policemen of Dubai are all set to have a brush with Nature and inculcate respect for nature among the future generation. They will also teach the youngsters about safeguarding the natural bounties. Again the week will be loaded with cultural shows and edutainment events to enthrall one and all.
Knowledge Surprises from August 3rd - 9th
The Land Department at the Department of Economic Development presents the Knowledge Surprises from August 3 to August 9 with the main focus on giving children a better understanding of the world around them. The children will get to learn in a fun-filled, entertaining way and thus enjoy themselves thoroughly during this week.
Flower Surprises from August 10th - 16th
The Dubai Municipality has always been actively participating in DSS and this time will be organising the Flower Surprises. There will be flowers all over beautifying the emirate during this week. During the Flower Surprises week the Municipality will showcase its aesthetic sense and use its extra-ordinary organizational skills and innovative planning to bring out a truly memorable week filled with colour, beauty and joy. Several new activities like the Summer Camp will take place at the Modhesh Fun City. The camp will bring live art, entertainment and sports activities for children. Several flowers-inspired events will include contests for best flower wedding sets, mall decorations with flowers, fashion shows for kids, and many workshops at different malls.
Heritage Surprises from August 17th -“ 23rd
The Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation is yet another department that has been actively involved in DSS from the very beginning as it now brings the Heritage Surprises, complete with folkloric shows, giving the people of Dubai a chance to get a glimpse of the rich heritage of the GCC. Highlights will include Arabian hospitality tents, handicraft exhibitions, exhibition on musical instruments and another on rowing boats. In addition, there will be traditional plays, cuisine demonstrations, folk dress contests, henna painting, heritage painting exhibition and performances by folk bands.
Back-2-School Surprises from August 24th - September 1st
The two-and-a-half month long event rounds off with the Back-2-School which is organised by the Department of Economic Development (DED). As the children would then be preparing to join schools again the department will present them with exciting new ideas to go back to school with smiling faces. There will be special shows of a play called 'Princess Verda and Lazy Aboud' at the Modhesh Fun City which carries the message that children must pay attention to their lessons in school. Cartoon characters will meet and greet children at different mall locations
If it wasn't for the joint efforts of all the concerned Government departments the DSS wouldn't have been the great success story that it is today. Now, in its ninth edition, the summer fiesta is all set to tread the path of glory and is poised to reach greater heights.
