RAK denies news reports about Desert Snow Village project

- July 26, 2005, 4:13 am

The Government of Ras Al Khaimah has denied news reports that it plans to set up a multi-billion dollar Desert Snow Village in association with a private firm.

Dr Khater Massaad, Advisor to Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, yesterday said the Government of Ras Al Khaimah has not granted permission or a licence to anyone to undertake such a project.

He also said the investment figures mentioned in the report were false.

Recent reports quoted the developer of the project, Halim Hani, as saying they would build the village which would accommodate 350,000 permanent residents in addition to 150,000 daily visitors.

The reports said the village would be an entirely self-sufficient town with 24 themed hotels, including an underwater hotel, and claimed to have facilities to simulate the North and South Pole atmospheres with winter sports.

Dr Massaad said the government has not even received a formal request from the developer to go ahead with the project.

“We were stunned to see news reports of the developer announcing plans to set up the mega project with investments to the tune of $55 billion. We would like to clarify that the developer has not even put an official request for the project, nor has he secured the permission and licences from the government,” Dr Massaad said.

He said Halim Hani, representing Al Salama International Trading and Marketing in Abu Dhabi, had approached the authorities a year ago with a proposal for a tourism project involving an investment of $3 billion.

He was told there would be no objection from the government if he could mobilise the financing after undertaking the necessary studies.
