Dubai’s tourism growth prospects under spotlight at Routes-2005 forum in Copenhagen
Dubai’s phenomenal emergence as a tourism and aviation hub and its visionary developments was under the spotlight at an international forum in Copenhagen attended by delegates from 120 countries and representatives of over 300 airlines and 600 airports from across the world.

As part of its aggressive marketing and promotional agenda, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and Dubai Convention Bureau(DCB) participated in the 11th World Route Development Forum held from September 25th to 27th in Denmark.

Mr. Awadh Seghayer Al Ketbi, Director of Dubai Convention Bureau (DCB) made a presentation on Dubai’s achievements and future growth prospects.

He said: ‘ The air connections between Dubai and other destinations have been growing fast to meet the unbridled demand. The massive expansion of Dubai’s iconic international airport and fleet expansion by the Dubai’s international airliner, Emirates, clearly reflects the reality of air service development and tourism growth being complimentary to each other.’

He said telecommunications, transport, travel and freight sector succeeded in enhancing its lead position as the largest contributor to the emirate’s GDP, growing by 19.3 per cent to AED16.24 billion in 2004.

Mr. Al Ketbi said Dubai’s strategic location at the crossroads of the East and West offers the world the best logistical advantages and air connectivity. The entire Middle East, CIS and Asian markets can be reached-out conveniently utilizing Dubai as the hub.

Dubai has been billed as the world’s second most-favorite international airport. In 1980, Dubai airport handled over 2.7 million passengers. The year 2004 recorded 20.2 per cent growth in passengers with a total of 21.7 million passengers passing through the airport. Dubai is regarded as a hub with 107 airlines offering connections to and from 160 destinations.

Routes Forum reflects the growing important of commercial relationships between airlines and airports. Routes has a strategic role in the air transport sector as it provides a platform for airlines and airports to meet at a single place. It is the only forum in the aviation industry that brings the airports and airline route planners together.

The forum looked how to create the air links that are needed to support your tourism development targets and how can tourism organisations work effectively with airports and airlines.
