Is Michael Jackson moving to Blue City, Oman?

Eccentric pop star Michael Jackson, who has been in Oman for the past two weeks, is said to be interested in buying into the prestigious Blue City project.

Hounded out of America after a high-profile child abuse court case, in which he was cleared, Jackson has been seen often in the company of project promoters in Oman. Neither side would comment.

According to sources close to the project, the fallen pop icon was said to be more keen on buying property within the development.

The $15-billion, 35 square kilometre Blue City project, which will be built over 15 years, is centred on Al Sawadi, some 100 kilometres northwest of Muscat.

Three five-star hotels, private beaches, marinas and a range of sports and leisure facilities will be located along the waterfront. Negotiations are under way for the first hotel-operation to start. An announcement is expected next month.

A golf resort hotel will be located within a double 18-hole championship golf course laid out along the Creek.

Details of an agreement setting up the Middle East’s first natural beachfront signature golf course are soon to be released. A tourist village, with a contemporary Arabian souq, almost 1,000 apartment units and a heritage museum are set to envelope the other side of the creek. Project bosses say the Blue City can attract more than two million tourists a year.

And project leaders also say they hope The Blue City will not just be a real estate opportunity, but a whole new community, meeting all the needs of residents to include education, health, communications, shopping and entertainment facilities.

Phase One focuses on 5.5 square km and includes strategic seed investments in the tourism and residential sectors and all related technical and social infrastructure.

Also included within Phase One of the project is a waterfront amphitheatre at the tip of the triangular peninsula.

In all, 6,000 residential units will be built over this area. A key element of the planning for The Blue City has been for the designers and builders to meet Oman’s stringent environmental requirements.

The environmental effects of Blue City’s land-based construction have been studied by the international consultants WS Atkins.

“The potential impacts on the physical and social environment of a major scheme like Blue City are significant and have to be closely managed.

“The Atkins team have drawn upon their global and local experience to inform the project team and to assist in the development of strategies which will aim to place environmental mitigation at the centre of the design and construction process,” said Roger Nickells, Resident Director of Atkins in Oman.

And Frank Fortune, General Manager of PHE Gulf said: “We are also looking at ways in which some of the existing natural heritage at the site, particularly the Khawr and mangrove beds, can be integrated into the wider Blue City development.”
