Emirates Railway to cost an estimated Dh14b

Emirates Railway to cost an estimated Dh14b

Emirates Railway, the UAE’s future national rail network, could stretch from 700 to 1,000 kilometres in length and cost between Dh9.86 billion to Dh14.29 billion to build at current estimates, officials said.

The network will stretch from Ruwais Industrial Area in Abu Dhabi till Ras Al Khaimah’s Port Saqr and will connect Jebel Ali port, free zone, Jebel Ali Airport City, Dubai city, Sharjah, Furairah port and Khorfakkan and create a nation-wide cargo transportation network in the first phase.

The network will later be upgraded to handle passengers across these destinations.

“The cargo network will enable it to operate normal passenger trains with a maximum speed of 160 kilometres per hour,” said Stefan Herzberg, senior project manager for the UAE Railway project.

“However, if the government plans to run a high-speed passenger train, then there has to be a separate rail network for high-speed communication.”

Abu Dhabi Government’s Department of Planning and Economy has commissioned a feasibility study in September this year to German transport consultants Doriner for the project.

The study, to be completed by September 2006, will offer a set of options to the government that include a complete business model for the construction, management, maintenance and revenue sharing options.

Doriner earlier submitted a pre-feasibility study to the government, that based its costing on an international standard of Dh17 million per kilometre construction of a normal non-electric rail line.

The pre-feasibility report estimated cargo transportation between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to reach 16.5 million tonnes.

The rail will be primarily used to transport containers, dry bulk, cement, sand, rock, aggregates and even petrochemicals, if need be. The network will be equipped to operate 100 trains on an average.

With massive industrialisation and investment in downstream petrochemical projects being undertaken by the Abu Dhabi government, the UAE is expected to witness a sharp growth in manufacturing activities in the coming years.

This will require a speedy and efficient transportation and distribution network, in which the rail will play a vital role, he said.
