Shams Abu Dhabi dredging work has started
- August 31, 2006, 6:38 pm
Sorouh Real Estate yesterday announced that the huge ‘Queen of the Netherlands’, a high-capacity trailing suction hopper dredger, has begun dredging and reclamation operations in the waters of Abu Dhabi for its Shams Abu Dhabi project on Al Reem island.
The Abu Dhabi-listed company awarded the dredging contract for Shams Abu Dhabi to Pal Technology with Boskalis Westminster as its dredging sub-contractor and Ghantoot Contracting its rock revetment sub-contractor.
With a massive quantity of sand required for the company’s flagship project 4.3 million cubic metres the work is expected to last three months.
The commencement of dredging marks rapid progress in implementing Sorouh’s flagship project since the official groundbreaking ceremony on July 23.
“With the arrival of the ‘Queen of the Netherlands’ and the commencement of dredging operations, Sorouh Real Estate has entered a new phase of implementing its most prestigious project, the Shams Abu Dhabi,” Sorouh Chief Executive Mounir Haidar said.
“We are pleased that the project is moving ahead as scheduled.”
A trailing suction hopper dredger operates by sucking sand up through a tube trailing on the seabed and loading it into hoppers positioned on board for depositing on Shams Abu Dhabi.
The 173 metre ‘Queen’ conveys the appearance of a majestic floating factory.
It has a draught of 13 metres and a capacity of 23,400 cubic metres.
Travelling at 16 knots the vessel can deliver sand to the Shams site at an estimated rate of over 50,000 cubic metres per day.
At a glance: First phase is likely to be completed by 2009
* Shams Abu Dhabi is located on Al Reem Island, which is 300 metres from the north-eastern shore of Abu Dhabi city.
