DC World has achieved a landark of operations in Djibouti
- October 28, 2006, 11:32 pm
Dubai Customs World, a subsidiary of Dubai World, has achieved a major landmark in its first full year of operations in Djibouti.
Under DC World’s management, the Djibouti Customs Strategic Development Project has reported a 31 percent jump in its revenue for the year September 2005 to September 2006, compared to the previous year.
The increase in income is an important step towards making the small East African nation move towards greater self-reliance in augmenting its revenue.
Hamad Mohammed Fadel Al Mazrouei, CEO, DC world, said:’Customs revenues in Djibouti witnessed a qualitative jump, rising by 31% during the period from September 2005 to September 2006 as compared with the same period of the previous year. Djibouti Customs have also approved implementation of the Human Resources system followed by us. DC World will also cover, out of the customs operations revenues in Djibouti, the salaries of the employees of the Djibouti Customs and all other related expenses. This rise in revenue has helped the Djibouti Customs meet expenditure on salaries for its employees and all other related expenses. This step towards self-sufficiency is a major milestone in our operations in Djibouti.”
The announcement marks the completion of Phase 2 of the Djibouti Customs Development Project.
This comes within the framework of the agreement signed between the two parties under which Dubai Customs World supervises and develops all customs operations and customs checking procedures at Djibouti’s main entry points.
DC World’s plans also include installation of a state-of-the-art IT system and conducting training programs for all categories of employees of the Djibouti Customs.
Hamad Mohammad Fadel Al Mazrouei, CEO, DC World, said: ‘The completion of Phase 2 of this project according to plan shows our commitment to the agreement and boosts our confidence as we bid to take our knowledge and expertise to other countries.
‘Phase 2 included installing the ‘Mirsal System’ at the customs check points we supervise in Djibouti International Airport, the adjacent Cargo Village and railway station. Phase 1 of the plan was successfully completed on June 6, 2005. We are confident that all remaining phases of the project will be completed on schedule by the end of next year.’
The news of success from Djibouti coincides with DC World’s decision to adopt new branding for itself.
Mr Al Mazrouei said: ‘DC World has launched a new slogan designed to reflect our expectations and our vision of expanding our presence in customs outlets worldwide. His Excellency, Sultan Ahmad Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Dubai World, has approved the slogan.’
Under the agreement signed with Djibouti Customs, DC World is in charge of simplifying customs procedures, applying international inspection standards and monitoring movement of goods, so as to increase customs revenues.
The modernization of customs procedures and management systems has resulted in a sharp rise shipping services and better facilities at Djibouti’s ports and airport.
DC World’s success is backed by similar achievements by several other Dubai World group companies:
DP World is involved in modernizing and managing operations at Djibouti Port, while Jafza is managing the African nation’s free zone.
Another group company, Nakheel is involved in developing the Djibouti Palace Kempinski Hotel, which is due to open in mid-November to host the summit of the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
Backed by Dubai World’s efficient management systems, Djibouti is hoping to position itself as a strategic trade link between countries in East Asia, Africa and Europe.
